The Science
WhatToTrustTM scores are calculated based on the research, scientific methods, and key tests involved in the development, validation, and production of wellness products.
When developing scientifically validated wellness products, it's essential to research each ingredient for its efficacy. For multi-ingredient formulations it's equally important to validate the entire formula for efficacy, ensuring the final product is both safe and effective. Not all companies conduct research on their own ingredients and formulations to ensure efficacy. Sometimes companies rely on borrowed research conducted by others on similar ingredients and products to support their claims.
For well-established ingredients like synthetically produced vitamins and minerals—such as Vitamin D or calcium—that have undergone extensive scientific and clinical research, repeating clinical trials is generally unnecessary. However, new trials may be warranted if the dosage deviates significantly from previous studies or if additional ingredients are introduced, creating a formulation that has not been previously tested within the specified dose range.
