You’ve probably seen it on a supplement label: “third-party tested.” It sounds reassuring, but it’s worth knowing what that phrase actually covers, and what it doesn’t. The “third party” is an outside lab. It’s not owned by the brand and had no role in making the product. Its only job is to check the ingredients and what’s actually inside the formulation. Whether you’re shopping for supplements to support sleep, gut health, or your kids, understanding the difference between quality testing and scientific evidence can help you make more informed choices.

Are Supplements FDA Regulated?

A lot of people assume supplements aren’t regulated at all. That’s not true. The FDA oversees the supplement industry, just differently than it oversees prescription drugs.

Unlike medications, dietary supplements don’t go through FDA pre-market approval before they’re sold. Instead, manufacturers must follow FDA Good Manufacturing Practices, or GMPs, which require manufacturing in a FDA approved facility that reduces contamination risk along with testing for ingredient identity, potency, and purity. That testing can happen in-house or through a third party contracted lab, but either way it’s just meeting the baseline legal requirement. So a label that says “third-party tested” could simply mean a company used a third party contracted lab to meet that requirement.

Most reputable brands take these requirements seriously. However, independent testing has occasionally found products that don’t match their labels. That’s worth keeping in mind, especially with unfamiliar brands that share little about who they are or how their products are made or where they get their ingredients and products tested.

Do All Brands Use Third-Party Testing?

Every manufacturer has to meet the baseline identity, potency, and purity testing requirements. But some brands go further, building their own dedicated quality control labs staffed with scientists and quality teams who test ingredients, monitor manufacturing, and verify finished products beyond what’s legally required. This gives them more direct control over sourcing and quality.

What Doesn't Third-Party Testing Tell You?

Here’s the part that often gets overlooked: third-party testing typically means a sign confirming what’s in the bottle. It doesn’t tell you whether what’s in the bottle is likely to work for the purpose it’s being marketed for.

A supplement can pass every quality test and still have weak scientific evidence behind its marketing claims. Quality testing evaluates manufacturing and ingredient accuracy. It doesn’t evaluate effectiveness.

What Does "Clinically Studied" Actually Mean?

If a supplement claims to be science-backed, clinically studied, or clinically proven, the company should be able to point to published human research supporting those claims for their own products.

The strongest evidence comes from well-designed clinical trials in people, using the same ingredient and ideally the same dose as the product being sold, with outcomes measured against a placebo. Lab and animal studies offer valuable early insight into how an ingredient might work, but they can’t reliably predict what happens in people. One small human study usually isn’t enough either.

Before accepting a claim like clinically studied or clinically proven, ask: studied how, in whom, at what dose, and with what result? If a company can’t answer, the claim deserves a closer look.
But, also keep in mind clinically studied ingredients might not mean the actual formulation that has more than one ingredient has a clinical study behind the whole product.

How to Choose a Trustworthy Supplement

There are really two questions worth asking about any supplement. Was it manufactured according to strong quality standards? Is there credible scientific evidence supporting what it claims to do?

Third-party testing or evidence of solid in-house quality control helps answer the first. Published human research helps answer the second.
